COINN/GEI Workshop on International Volunteer Opportunities
On August 14-17, the Council of International Neonatal Nurses will hold its 9th COINN Conference in Vancouver, Canada. Over 500 neonatal nurses, students, administrators, educators and neonatal nurse practitioners from across the world will come together under the theme ONE – One Passion, One Vision, One World.
As part of the Pre-Conference Workshops, COINN President Dr. Karen New and GEI Executive Director Dr. Michael Grosspietsch will team up to provide an interactive workshop. The title is “International Volunteer Opportunities – developing clinical capacity and improving newborn outcomes”.
This interactive workshop introduces the crucial role of international volunteers in the development of clinical capacity in resource-limited settings in developing countries. Far beyond the mere transfer of skills, this people-centered development approach increases professional motivation, self-awareness, assertiveness and confidence of all involved. We will explore the challenges presented by local practical and cultural environments, demonstrate leading training modules for neonatal resuscitation and essential care (including Helping Babies Breathe and Essential Care for Every Baby), and analyze the success of partnership models from diverse parts of the world, such as Papua New Guinea, Rwanda and Vietnam. Practical case studies derive from the partnership between COINN, member associations and the Global Engagement Institute.
