GEI's Internship Program is a supervised placement with a host organization in your field, four to eight weeks, in one of six academic tracks and six destinations. It is a course with its own syllabus, hosted by GEI's full-time in-country team from arrival to departure, and it can be taken standalone or for U.S. academic credit through Hamline University, GEI's school of record.

Placements with startups and social enterprises, companies, and business-support organizations, in areas from finance and marketing to operations and product.
Placements with engineering firms, infrastructure and utility providers, technology organizations, and NGOs.
Clinical placements in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health, or non-clinical placements in public health, NGOs, and health systems. Clinical placements are standalone and do not carry academic credit; interns observe and assist within the host's rules and their own scope of practice.

Placements with community mental health programs, social service and family support organizations, and psychosocial support NGOs. Placements are non-clinical.
Placements with policy and governance institutions, international development organizations, human rights and legal advocacy groups, and media outlets.
Placements with development and environmental NGOs, conservation organizations, and community initiatives.

HOW THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM WORKS

You choose a field and a destination
Six fields, six destinations, one program. Pick the track that matches your studies and the destination you want to work in; the program page for that combination is where you apply.
GEI matches you to a host

You are matched to a host organization by your level of study, skills, and preferred field, with a placement description agreed before you arrive. Host organizations range from startups and NGOs to hospitals, ministries, and newsrooms, depending on your track.
You work full time, with support around you
A minimum of 40 hours a week at your host organization. The course opens with four orientation days and adds three professional development site visits across the destination's sector, three cultural activities, and a weekly meeting with your supervisor. GEI's in-country team is there throughout, with 24/7 emergency support.
You leave with work you can show
A reflective journal, blog, or vlog through the program, and a placement report with two or three work products at the end. For credit-bearing internships, the following elements count towards the grade: participation (40%), the journal (20%), and the report (40%).

COHORTS, CREDIT, AND ELIGIBILITY

Cohorts and dates
Fixed cohorts run in January (4 weeks) and in June and July (4, 6, or 8 weeks), on the same dates in every field and every destination. Placements on your own dates, from 4 weeks, year-round, in person or virtual, are available on request.
Credit and cost
Standalone, or credit-bearing: 4 U.S. credit hours for a 4-week cohort, up to 6 for 6 weeks, and up to 8 for 8 weeks, awarded through Hamline University, GEI's school of record, which issues the transcript, unless you receive credit via your home institution. Fees start at US $3,850 for four weeks; each program page shows the exact figures.
Who can apply
The Internship Program is generally open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students who have a theoretical foundation in their field, or by consent of the faculty sponsor. Students from partner institutions may take part under their own institution's name.

WHAT EVERY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM INCLUDES

A placement in your field
A supervised placement with a host organization, matched to you, with a placement description agreed before you arrive.
Preparation and orientation
Pre-departure advising and orientation, then four orientation days in the destination before your placement starts.
A full-time team in every destination
GEI's in-country coordinators host every cohort from arrival to departure, with 24/7 emergency support throughout, and your supervisor meets you every week.
Housing and daily life
Housing is included for the full length of your program: guesthouses, homestays, serviced apartments, or university residence halls, depending on the destination. Three cultural activities and the site visits are part of the course.

  • Meals other than those included in course activities
  • Personal expenses and items of a personal nature
  • Medical costs beyond what the health insurance covers
  • Weekend travel and other discretionary spending

FOR INTERNSHIP AND CAREER SERVICES OFFICES

GEI runs the Internship Program on the same dates and terms in every field and every destination, so one program, one set of dates, and one contact cover all your students. The program can be co-branded with your institution and offered as your own, under your name and brand as much or as little as you prefer. There is no minimum enrollment, and a named GEI contact supports you from the first conversation to the placement report.
